CHANGING THE WHEEL

The driver changes the wheel.
I do not like the place I have come from.
I do not like the place I am going to.
Why with impatience do I
Watch him changing the wheel?

From where: USA (LA); to where: East Germany (Berlin), after the crushing of the workers' uprising. The poem is printed in 1953.

All can be found in the remarkable study of Otto Friedrich, "City of Nets" (New York: Harper & Row; 1986), Chapter 9 and pages 336-337 in particular.
